Where it came from
The Sandsteppe Mastodon is a card from the Fate Reforged set, released in 2015 as part of the Khans of Tarkir block for Magic: The Gathering. This specific card represents the promo version, distinguished by its unique collector number and the date stamp characteristic of tournament-related releases during this era. The set focuses on the fractured timeline of the Tarkir plane, where players explore a world of warring clans and draconic influence, with the Mastodon serving as a representation of the resilient, beast-heavy Abzan Houses faction.
The artwork was created by Filip Burburan, who aimed to capture the massive scale and stoic, armored nature of the Abzan creatures. The design emphasizes the card's mechanical identity as a durable creature capable of reinforcing the board with the bolster mechanic. Upon its release, it was noted for its presence in limited formats and its contribution to the flavor of a faction defined by endurance and defensive synergy, becoming a sought-after piece for players who valued the distinct aesthetic of the Khans of Tarkir timeline.
