Provenance

Where it came from

Old Ghastbark was originally printed in the 2008 Magic: The Gathering expansion Shadowmoor. The set was designed to explore a world of eternal twilight and folklore-inspired horror, with the card mechanically representing the haunting, sentient flora of that plane. Its illustration by Jesper Ejsing captures the ominous, twisted aesthetic characteristic of the Shadowmoor environment, intended to evoke a sense of unease through organic, limb-like tree branches.

The card was later included in 'The List,' a curated selection of reprints integrated into Set Boosters starting in 2020. This initiative was designed by Wizards of the Coast to bring older, out-of-print cards back into circulation, allowing players to discover past mechanics and art in contemporary packs. The version featured in 'The List' retains the original Shadowmoor card frame and art, serving as a direct historical nod to the era of its debut.
