Provenance

Where it came from

Swarm of Rats first appeared in the 1997 Magic: The Gathering expansion set Weatherlight, illustrated by artist Margaret Organ-Kean. The design was intended to represent the swarming, modular nature of vermin as a cohesive creature type, allowing players to build increasingly powerful board states as they accumulated more copies of the card in play. The original illustration captured a gothic, claustrophobic aesthetic consistent with the dark fantasy tone of the period.

The version designated as P02-89 appears in The List, a curated selection of reprints included in Set Boosters starting in 2020. This initiative was designed to give players access to iconic or nostalgic cards from Magic's long history within modern product packaging. By including the original art and layout, Wizards of the Coast aimed to preserve the visual identity of the card while integrating it into contemporary gameplay environments where it serves as both a functional utility and a piece of collectible history.
