Scorched Earth

Scorched Earth was originally released in the 1994 Magic: The Gathering expansion set The Dark. Designed by Richard Garfield, the card emerged during a period when the game was rapidly expanding its mechanical boundaries, introducing themes of attrition and board control that would become staples of red-aligned gameplay. The illustration, created by artist Anson Maddocks, depicts a desolate landscape, leaning into the grim, high-fantasy aesthetic that defined the early visual language of the game.

The card was later included in 'The List', a rotating selection of reprints curated by Wizards of the Coast to be found within Set Boosters.
