Where it came from
Ongoing Investigation is an enchantment card released in 2024 as part of the Murders at Karlov Manor Commander set for the collectible card game Magic: The Gathering. The card draws heavily from the set's central thematic focus on a hardboiled detective mystery, set against the backdrop of the plane of Ravnica. Its design incorporates the investigation mechanic, which encourages players to gather clues, reflecting the methodical nature of detective work in the game's mechanics.
The card’s illustration was created by artist Fajareka Setiawan, who utilized a moody, atmospheric aesthetic to capture the essence of a crime scene under examination. The artwork reflects the top-down design philosophy of the set, where mechanical function is inextricably linked to the narrative trope of a sleuth uncovering secrets. Upon its release, it was well-regarded by players for its synergy with token-focused strategies, particularly those centered on the investigate keyword.
