Where it came from
Ongoing Investigation was released in 2016 as part of the Shadows over Innistrad expansion for Magic: The Gathering. This set returned players to the gothic horror-themed plane of Innistrad, focusing on themes of mystery, psychological instability, and the corruption of the environment. The card reflects the set's central narrative conceit, where the plane's inhabitants are increasingly disturbed by bizarre and unsettling occurrences that require methodical inquiry.
The card's artwork was created by illustrator Deruchenko Alexander. It depicts a scene of quiet, investigative focus that contrasts with the high-fantasy combat typical of the game, emphasizing the set's investigative mechanics. The design centers on the 'Clue' token mechanic introduced in this block, rewarding players for engaging with the mystery-solving motif of the set. It was received as a functional tool for decks looking to maintain card advantage and sustain pressure through incremental discovery.
