Where it came from
The Oni-Cult Anvil was released in 2022 as part of the Magic: The Gathering expansion set The Brothers' War Commander. It depicts an artifact from the Kamigawa plane, specifically associated with the Cult of Oni, a group dedicated to venerating demons. The card was designed as a key engine for sacrifice-themed decks, providing a recurring resource-generation loop that rewards players for dismantling their own artifacts.
The artwork for the card was created by artist Livia Prima, who utilized a dark, visceral aesthetic to capture the menacing nature of the anvil's purpose. The design focuses on the object's role in a ritualistic setting, emphasizing the gritty and industrial fantasy style consistent with the card's mechanical function. It was well-received by the competitive community for its efficiency in synergy-heavy archetypes, becoming a staple in various formats.
