Provenance

Where it came from

Ophidian was originally printed in the Weatherlight expansion in 1997, designed as a blue creature capable of drawing cards upon dealing combat damage to a player. It became a defining staple of the competitive landscape, particularly within the 'Draw-Go' control archetypes of the late 1990s, where its ability to maintain card advantage forced opponents into difficult tactical positions.

The Friday Night Magic version released in 2001 features the signature card frame update and foil treatment typical of the early promotional series. While the original illustration by Daren Bader was retained, the release served to celebrate the creature's status as a tournament icon, providing players with a visually distinct version to reward participation in local grassroots events.
