Where it came from
Over the Top was released in 2022 as part of The Brothers' War, a Magic: The Gathering expansion that revisited the iconic conflict between Urza and Mishra. The card serves as a chaotic, high-variance spell that reflects the desperate, experimental nature of warfare depicted throughout the set's narrative. It was designed to capture the flavor of grand, unpredictable engineering projects common to the Artificer factions of the storyline.
The card features illustration by Wisnu Tan, who utilized a vivid, expressive style to depict the chaotic result of the spell's effect. The art emphasizes the overwhelming scale and structural instability inherent in the set's mechanical themes. Upon its release, the card became a popular inclusion in casual formats like Commander, where players value the dramatic and unpredictable table-states it generates.
