Where it came from
Over the Top was released as part of The Brothers' War expansion for Magic: The Gathering in late 2022. The card was designed as a chaotic, high-variance rare that reflects the grand scale of the conflict between Urza and Mishra, two central figures in the game's long-running lore. Its design leans into the theme of total warfare, allowing players to flip cards from the top of their libraries to populate the battlefield, a mechanic that evokes the massive, sweeping nature of the set's titular conflict.
The artwork for this card was created by illustrator Cristi Balanescu, who has contributed extensively to the visual identity of modern Magic sets. The aesthetic direction for this piece focuses on the scale and intensity of the Brothers' War, depicting a scene of overwhelming movement and explosive action. Upon release, the card was received as a quintessential casual-play engine, frequently highlighted in community discussions for its ability to drastically shift the momentum of a game in a single turn.
