Where it came from
Overmaster was originally printed in the Odyssey set in 2001, designed as a powerful red sorcery meant to support aggressive playstyles by preventing countermagic. It surfaced during a period when Wizards of the Coast was experimenting with mechanics that rewarded players for committing to the stack, specifically targeting blue control decks that dominated the tournament landscape of the era.
The version included in the Dominaria Remastered set, released in 2023, utilizes the classic illustration by Greg Staples. Staples, a long-time contributor to the Magic: The Gathering aesthetic, captured the raw, chaotic energy of red mana. This remastered printing was curated to honor the history of the Dominaria plane, bringing back iconic cards with updated frames to appeal to players who appreciate the game's long-standing visual evolution.
