Where it came from
Overmaster was originally printed in the Odyssey set in 2001, designed for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game to provide red-aligned spellcasters with a tactical advantage against counter-magic. The card allows a sorcery spell to become uncounterable, reflecting the chaotic and aggressive nature of red mana in the game's color pie philosophy. Its inclusion in the 2023 Dominaria Remastered set serves as a nostalgic callback to the early 2000s era of the game.
The artwork for the Dominaria Remastered version of Overmaster was created by artist Igor Kieryluk, who depicted a powerful figure channeling raw energy. This piece fits within the broader aesthetic of the set, which curated iconic cards from throughout the history of the Dominaria plane and Magic's wider lore to provide a cohesive, high-fantasy visual experience for players and collectors.
