Where it came from
Overseer of the Damned was included in the Midnight Hunt Commander set released by Wizards of the Coast in 2021. The card, originally printed in the Commander 2014 set, serves as a quintessential example of black-aligned creature design in Magic: The Gathering, focusing on zombie tribal synergies and removal through its ability to create tokens whenever a non-token creature dies.
The artwork for this particular printing was illustrated by Nils Hamm, whose distinctive, atmospheric style emphasizes the macabre aesthetic of the Innistrad plane. Hamm’s design choice focuses on the imposing, decaying presence of the overseer, reinforcing the card's function as a high-impact threat that demands removal while simultaneously generating board advantage in multiplayer Commander games.
