Where it came from
The Gleaming Overseer originated in the 2021 Magic: The Gathering set Midnight Hunt Commander. This card was introduced as part of the Zombie-themed 'Undead Unleashed' deck, which leaned into the gothic horror aesthetic of the Innistrad plane. Mechanically, the card was designed to support the 'Amass' keyword, a mechanic that creates a growing army of Zombies, reflecting the flavor of an overseer coordinating a relentless, undead horde.
The card’s illustration was crafted by artist Bram Sels, who sought to capture the eerie, oppressive atmosphere of a zombie-infested cityscape. The design features the titular overseer looming over a gathering of the undead, utilizing a color palette of sickly greens and deep shadows. Upon its release, it was well-received by players focusing on tribal creature strategies for its ability to provide both a body on the board and a persistent buff for token-based army builds.
