Where it came from
Overt Operative was released in 2017 as part of Unstable, the third 'un-set' from Wizards of the Coast for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Designed by Mark Rosewater and his team, these sets are famously non-tournament legal, allowing for experimental mechanics that push the boundaries of traditional card interactions. The set was created to explore themes of contraptions and mad science, moving away from the rigid rules of standard competitive play to emphasize whimsy and chaotic gameplay experiences.
The card features artwork by illustrator Johannes Voss, who utilized the set’s signature steampunk-inspired aesthetic to depict a character hiding in plain sight. Like many cards in the Unstable set, the design focuses on meta-humor and interaction, challenging players to think about the physical state of the game rather than just raw power. It was generally well-received by fans of casual formats for its clever integration of flavor and mechanics, cementing its place as a standout piece of silver-bordered card design.
