Where it came from
Overwhelming Splendor was released in 2017 as part of the Hour of Devastation set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, this set depicts the climactic battle between the Elder Dragon Nicol Bolas and the Gatewatch on the plane of Amonkhet. The card was designed as a mythic rare enchantment meant to represent the overwhelming power of the antagonist's influence over the world, functioning as a top-down design meant to simulate the total suppression of an opponent's resources.
The artwork for the card was created by Aleksi Briclot, a long-time contributor to the game whose style frequently leans into high-fantasy epic scale. Briclot utilized the visual motif of the plane's sun-drenched architecture and the encroaching, corrupting presence of Bolas's influence to convey the sense of helplessness described in the card's mechanical rules. Upon release, it became a notable subject of discussion within the commander format community due to its oppressive impact on the state of play.
