Where it came from
Abrade was introduced in the 2017 Magic: The Gathering expansion Hour of Devastation. Set on the plane of Amonkhet, the card reflects the themes of destruction and shifting sands prevalent in the block's narrative, where the false god Nicol Bolas orchestrates the ruin of a desert society. It was designed as an efficient utility spell, offering players the versatility to choose between dealing direct damage to a creature or destroying an artifact, making it a staple choice for competitive play.
The card’s illustration was created by artist Igor Kieryluk, whose work often emphasizes dark fantasy and dramatic lighting. His depiction of the spell captures the raw, abrasive power of shifting desert landscapes tearing through material objects. Upon release, the card was lauded by players for its balance and flexibility, quickly cementing itself as a foundational component in red-inclusive decks across multiple game formats due to its reliable performance.
