Where it came from
Oviya, Automech Artisan was released in the 2016 Magic: The Gathering expansion Aetherdrift, which was themed around the steampunk-inspired plane of Kaladesh. This set was designed to showcase an artifact-centric environment characterized by optimism and a vibrant, art-deco aesthetic. The character was created to serve as a representative of the artificer tradition within this world, emphasizing the theme of crafting mechanical companions and complex, clockwork inventions.
The card was illustrated by Johannes Voss, who utilized a warm, detailed palette to capture Oviya’s creative process within her workshop. His design highlights the intricate details of her mechanical creations, aiming to ground the character in a narrative of innovation and industrial artistry. Upon its release, the card was received as a flavorful addition to the set’s mechanics, specifically favored by players interested in creature-token strategies and artifact synergy.
