Provenance

Where it came from

Released in 1998 as part of the Unglued set, Ow was designed as one of the hallmark cards in Wizards of the Coast's first foray into silver-bordered, joke-oriented Magic: The Gathering products. The set was created to provide a lighthearted departure from the game's increasingly complex tournament mechanics, offering players a space for parody and unconventional interactions that would not be functional in standard competitive play.

The card features artwork by Edward P. Beard, Jr., a prolific contributor to the game during the late 1990s and early 2000s. In keeping with the set's humorous tone, the illustration depicts a whimsical, literal interpretation of the pain associated with losing a life point in the game. Upon its release, the card was widely received as a quintessential example of the self-referential, fourth-wall-breaking design philosophy that defined the Unglued experiment.
