Timmy, Power Gamer

Timmy, Power Gamer was released in 1998 as part of Unglued, the first expansion set for Magic: The Gathering designed entirely for humor and unconventional gameplay. The set was created by a dedicated design team at Wizards of the Coast, including Mark Rosewater, who sought to break the strict rules of the game to explore 'silver-bordered' design space. This card specifically parodies the 'Timmy' player profile, a term coined by the design team to describe players who enjoy the visceral thrill of casting massive, powerful spells rather than focusing purely on competitive efficiency.

The card was illustrated by Heather Hudson, whose work defined much of the early aesthetic of the game. Her depiction of the character captures the playful, chaotic spirit of the set, emphasizing the joy of simply placing large, expensive creatures onto the battlefield for free. Upon its release, the card was widely received as a beloved inside joke, functioning as both a functional card within its specific format and a meta-commentary on the player psychology that has been a foundational pillar of the community since the game’s inception.
