Provenance

Where it came from

Pariah was originally released in the Urza's Destiny expansion in 1999 before being reprinted as part of the Seventh Edition core set in 2001. As a white enchantment, it introduced a unique defensive mechanic where all damage dealt to the controller is instead redirected to the enchanted creature. This design serves as a thematic representation of self-sacrifice, forcing players to manage their battlefield resources carefully to protect their life total.

The artwork for the Seventh Edition printing was provided by Donato Giancola, a highly regarded fantasy illustrator known for his painterly and atmospheric style. Giancola sought to convey the heavy, isolating burden of the card's effect through his depiction of a solitary figure. The card was well-received by players for its tactical versatility, becoming a staple in casual control decks that utilized creatures with protective abilities to negate the redirected damage.
