Provenance

Where it came from

Duress was originally introduced in the Urza's Saga set in 1998, designed by Mark Rosewater as a black sorcery intended to provide players with a strategic edge by stripping an opponent's hand of non-creature threats. The card quickly became a staple in competitive Magic: The Gathering due to its efficiency and the critical information it provides about an opponent's game plan, remaining a fixture in tournament play for decades.

The Seventh Edition printing, which features the artwork by Christopher Rush, was released in 2001 as part of the game's core set refresh. Rush, a legendary illustrator in the Magic community known for his iconic work on the Black Lotus, opted for a haunting, visceral depiction that perfectly captured the card's theme of psychological manipulation and forced vulnerability. This particular version is highly regarded by collectors for its clean, classic aesthetic and its role in bridging the gap between early card design and the modern era of the game.
