Where it came from
Peregrine Drake was originally printed in the 1999 Urza's Destiny expansion, designed to capitalize on the high-mana-cost, high-reward mechanics characteristic of the Urza block. It quickly became notorious in competitive formats due to its ability to untap lands, which enabled powerful 'combo' strategies that allowed players to generate infinite mana or cycle through their entire deck. Its inclusion in the 2016 Planechase Anthology collection served as a nod to its legacy, reintroducing the card into a supplemental format designed for multiplayer games.
The artwork for the card, provided by artist Terese Nielsen, captures the creature's ethereal and majestic nature, fitting the setting of a plane-hopping avian predator. The design aims to marry the creature's mechanical utility—its ability to refund its own casting cost through land untapping—with a sense of soaring, untethered movement. While the card has faced various restrictions in sanctioned tournaments over the years, it remains a celebrated, albeit controversial, centerpiece for players who enjoy complex interactions.
