Where it came from
The Island card from the Planechase Anthology, released in 2016, serves as a functional component of the various supplemental decks included in this comprehensive box set. This collection was designed to repackage and revitalize the Planechase format, which utilizes oversized cards to simulate traveling between different dimensions within the Magic: The Gathering multiverse. The landscape artwork featured on this specific card was curated to evoke the atmospheric and immersive aesthetic central to the Planechase experience, ensuring visual consistency across the diverse card pool provided in the anthology.
The illustration for this card is part of the broader artistic legacy of the game, continuing a long tradition of commissioning distinct, high-fantasy scenery to define the basic resource cards. By selecting evocative environmental imagery, the artists aimed to ground the abstract mechanical concept of 'mana' in a tangible, imaginative setting. Upon its release, the anthology was well-received by players who appreciated the consolidation of scattered expansion sets into a single, cohesive product, solidifying its place as a practical utility for both casual players and format enthusiasts.
