Where it came from
Whispersilk Cloak was originally introduced in the 2004 set Darksteel, designed to provide a versatile utility option for creatures within the Mirrodin block. It was reprinted in the 2016 Planechase Anthology, a collection that bundled various supplemental products designed for the multiplayer Planechase format. This reprint retained the original functionality that allowed players to protect their creatures from interaction while simultaneously granting them unblockable status, a combination that has remained a staple in casual Commander and kitchen-table play for nearly two decades.
The card features artwork by Christopher Rush, one of the most iconic illustrators in the early history of the game. His design for the Cloak captures the ethereal, translucent nature of the equipment, favoring a classic high-fantasy aesthetic that aligns with the artifact-heavy themes of the original Mirrodin setting. Upon its release, it was well-received by players for its efficiency in Limited and casual constructed formats, becoming widely recognized for its clean, straightforward design that persists in modern deck building.
