Where it came from
Pest Infestation was released in 2021 as part of the Commander 2021 set, specifically within the Silverquill Statement preconstructed deck. The card is tied to the Prismari and Silverquill factions of the Strixhaven: School of Mages expansion, reflecting the lore of a magical university where students utilize various magical disciplines. Within the game's mechanics, the card serves as a thematic representation of the pests—small, nuisance creatures—that were a recurring motif throughout the Strixhaven set, designed to provide players with a scalable tool for both board interaction and creature generation.
The card was illustrated by Wisnu Tan, who captured the chaotic, swarming nature of the pests in a dynamic, high-fantasy style. The design intent focused on flexibility, allowing players to pay varying amounts of mana to destroy artifacts or enchantments while creating an equivalent number of 1/1 Pest tokens. Upon release, the card was well-received by the Commander community for its efficient utility and its ability to turn a defensive or disruptive play into an aggressive board state, solidifying its place as a staple in green-based decks.
