Where it came from
Pest Infestation was released in 2021 as part of the Prismari Performance deck for the Commander 2021 set. This card is a green sorcery designed for the multiplayer format, specifically created to offer players a flexible utility tool that scales with the amount of mana invested. Within the context of Magic: The Gathering, it reflects the 'strixhaven' university theme of magical experimentation, translating the concept of an overwhelming insect swarm into a board-clearing mechanic that simultaneously provides the caster with creature tokens.
The card’s visual design is the work of illustrator Magali Villeneuve, a prominent artist in the franchise known for her clean, expressive, and detailed fantasy style. Her interpretation of the card depicts a chaotic, vibrant scene of pests encroaching upon an academic setting, capturing the thematic tension between scholarly pursuits and magical mishaps. Upon its release, it was well-received by the Commander community for its efficiency, as it serves the dual purpose of removing problematic artifacts and enchantments while establishing a defensive presence on the battlefield.
