Provenance

Where it came from

Pestilence was released in 1993 as part of the Limited Edition Alpha set, the very first printing of Magic: The Gathering by Wizards of the Coast. Created by Richard Garfield, the game was designed to provide a portable, strategic experience that could be expanded through the collection of randomized card packs, a concept that fundamentally changed the landscape of tabletop gaming. The black-bordered cards of the Alpha set were printed in limited quantities, cementing their status as the foundation of the hobby.

The artwork for Pestilence was illustrated by Quinton Hoover, a prolific artist whose distinctively fluid and organic style defined much of the early game's aesthetic. Hoover’s illustration depicts the grim, creeping nature of the card's effect, which deals damage to all creatures and players on the board. The card was received as a potent, symmetrical board-wipe effect, becoming a staple of black-aligned control decks for its ability to clear the field and pressure opponents simultaneously.
