Ironclaw Orcs

Ironclaw Orcs was released in 1993 as part of the Limited Edition Alpha set, the very first printing of the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Created by Richard Garfield and published by Wizards of the Coast, the game emerged from a desire to create a portable, fast-paced strategy experience that combined the depth of hobby games with the collectibility of baseball cards. The Alpha set was produced in a modest print run of approximately 2.6 million cards, establishing the foundational mechanics and lore that would define the burgeoning collectible card game genre.

The artwork for this card was illustrated by Sandra Everingham, who contributed several pieces to the initial set. Her design sought to capture the gritty, classic fantasy aesthetic prevalent in early nineties gaming, depicting the orcs with the rugged and bellicose visual language characteristic of the archetype.
