Where it came from
Gixian Puppeteer was released in 2022 as part of The Brothers' War, a Magic: The Gathering expansion set that revisits the foundational conflict between Urza and Mishra. This card represents the dark influence of Gix, the Phyrexian Praetor, who utilized biomechanical manipulation to twist the loyalties of soldiers during the war. It fits into a narrative lineage of Phyrexian-themed cards that explore the corruption and subjugation of flesh by machine.
The card’s artwork was illustrated by Dominik Mayer, whose distinct style—often characterized by sharp, angular lines and a brooding color palette—was employed to convey the grotesque, puppet-master nature of the Gixian forces. The design focuses on the visual language of Phyrexian machinery, emphasizing the cold, utilitarian aesthetic that defines the faction. Within the competitive community, the card is recognized for its graveyard-interaction mechanics, which mirror the lore-based concept of retrieving fallen soldiers to serve as unwilling instruments of war.
