Provenance

Where it came from

Phantasmal Forces originated as a card in the Alpha set of Magic: The Gathering, released in 1993, and was reprinted in the Fifth Edition core set in 1997. The card represents the early era of the game where design focused on high-risk, high-reward mechanics. As a blue creature, it challenged players to manage their resources carefully, as its upkeep cost required the player to pay mana each turn or sacrifice the creature, reflecting the ephemeral and demanding nature of a phantom entity.

The artwork for this version was rendered by illustrator Quinton Hoover, a foundational artist whose lyrical and vibrant style defined much of the early aesthetic of Magic. Hoover sought to evoke a sense of otherworldly fragility and magical intensity, capturing the creature in a state of semi-translucent flux. The design remains a hallmark of 1990s fantasy card art, noted for its emphasis on character expression and atmospheric detail within the constrained frame of a standard game card.
