Where it came from
Phantasmal Forces originated in the early years of Magic: The Gathering, first appearing in the 1994 Revised Edition, which served as the third core set for the trading card game. Created by Wizards of the Coast, the card was part of the shift to standardize the game's mechanics and card pool following the initial limited print runs. As a blue creature, it reflected the game's early emphasis on 'illusion' mechanics, where powerful effects were balanced by the requirement for upkeep costs to maintain the creature on the battlefield.
The artwork for this iteration was illustrated by Anson Maddocks, one of the original artists who defined the game's early aesthetic. Maddocks employed his signature surrealist style, focusing on distorted, haunting figures that captured the ephemeral nature of the card's namesake. Upon its release, the card became a staple of early blue-control decks, valued for its ability to fly over ground-based defenses, though players often struggled with the restrictive mana upkeep required to keep it in play.
