Where it came from
Assault Suit was released in 2014 as part of the Commander 2014 set, a collection of preconstructed decks designed specifically for the Magic: The Gathering Commander format. The card was included in the 'Built from Scratch' deck, which focused on the red color identity and artifact synergies. Its introduction provided a unique political tool for multiplayer games, forcing opponents to attack players other than the owner while granting them temporary control of the equipped creature.
The illustration was created by artist Igor Kieryluk, who depicted the suit as a formidable, mechanical frame glowing with red energy. The design intent behind the card was to introduce a 'gifting' mechanic that encouraged chaos and interaction on the battlefield. Upon its release, it was well-received by the Commander community for its ability to shift table dynamics, cementing its reputation as a staple for red-based aggressive or political deck builds.
