Where it came from
Pia and Kiran Nalaar were first introduced as pivotal characters in the Magic: The Gathering lore during the 2015 Magic Origins expansion. The set was designed to explore the origin stories of five iconic Planeswalkers, with this specific card highlighting the parents of Chandra Nalaar. Mechanically, the card was crafted to represent the inventors' resourceful nature on the plane of Kaladesh, utilizing a triggered ability that creates Thopter tokens to mirror their work as tinkerers and revolutionaries.
The artwork for this particular promo version, often featuring alternate treatments associated with the Magic Origins release cycle, maintains the aesthetic of Kaladesh’s steampunk-inspired, artisan-focused culture. Artists working on the set aimed to capture the warmth and tactical ingenuity of the couple, emphasizing their connection to the artifacts they create. Upon its release, the card was well-received by players for its synergy in artifact-focused strategies and its narrative weight in grounding Chandra’s history within a familial context.
