Where it came from
Pia and Kiran Nalaar were introduced as part of the Magic Origins set in 2015, a release designed to explore the origin stories of five iconic Planeswalkers. This specific promotional version, numbered 157s, was distributed as a participation reward or tournament prize during the set's release window. The card depicts the parents of Chandra Nalaar, the pyromancer protagonist of the set, highlighting their role as inventors on the plane of Kaladesh and setting the stage for Chandra’s emotional narrative arc.
The art was rendered by Eric Deschamps, who captured the duo in the midst of their mechanical tinkering, emphasizing the Artificer subtype that would define their playstyle. The design of the card—creating Thopter tokens—reflects the steampunk-inspired aesthetics and technological themes of Kaladesh. It was well-received by players for its synergy with artifact-heavy decks, becoming a staple utility card that blends thematic resonance with functional gameplay.
