Where it came from
Pia and Kiran Nalaar were first introduced to the Magic: The Gathering multiverse as key figures in the lore of the plane of Kaladesh. As the parents of the planeswalker Chandra Nalaar, they were established as inventive rebels who fought against the oppressive Consulate, seeking to preserve the freedom of ingenuity and aether access for their people. Their design reflects this central role, capturing the couple’s collaborative spirit and their expertise in building thopters.
The card was designed to mechanically represent their synergy as tinkers, allowing players to create artifact creature tokens that mirror the flying machines they manufactured in their workshop. The illustration, featured in the Aetherdrift Commander set, emphasizes their bond and shared dedication to the resistance. It has been well-regarded by fans for its thematic depth and its importance in grounding Chandra’s origin story within the vibrant, steampunk-inspired aesthetic of the Kaladesh setting.
