Pillage

Pillage was first introduced in the Alliances expansion in 1996, eventually being reprinted as an uncommon sorcery in the Seventh Edition core set released in 2002. As a dual-function card, it reflects the aggressive design philosophy of the era, allowing players to destroy either an artifact or a land for a relatively modest mana cost. This card emerged during a period when Wizards of the Coast was consolidating its core game mechanics, aiming to provide players with versatile utility cards that could punish opponents relying heavily on specific board states.

The artwork for the Seventh Edition printing was provided by Bradley Williams, who leaned into the aggressive, disruptive nature of the card's effect. Williams' illustration captures the visceral, destructive intent of the sorcery, using a visual language consistent with the high-fantasy aesthetic established for the core sets of that time. Upon its release, the card was well-received by players for its efficiency, finding a lasting home in various aggressive and midrange strategies that sought to disrupt opponent resources while maintaining board pressure.
