Provenance

Where it came from

Healing Salve was originally introduced as one of the 'boon' cycle cards in the Alpha set of Magic: The Gathering in 1993, designed by Richard Garfield. It was conceived as a white-aligned instant that provided a low-cost, flexible option for either life gain or damage prevention, reflecting white mana's role as a defensive and restorative color in the game's early mechanical identity.

The Seventh Edition version, released in 2001, featured updated artwork by illustrator Arnie Swekel. This edition marked a significant milestone for the game as it was the first base set to feature modern card borders and the new card frame design. Swekel’s illustration moved away from the more abstract, painterly style of the early 90s, offering a clearer, high-fantasy depiction of magical restoration that fit the polished, uniform aesthetic intended for the core set's refresh.
