Where it came from
The Pirate token was created for the 2022 Magic: The Gathering expansion, 'Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur's Gate'. This set was designed to integrate the flavor and mechanics of Dungeons & Dragons into the card game, allowing players to draft decks inspired by iconic roles and creatures found in the Forgotten Realms setting. As a token card, it represents a temporary creature entity summoned by other spells or abilities within the game.
The artwork for this specific token was illustrated by Titus Lunter. Lunter’s design reflects the rugged aesthetic of the Baldur’s Gate aesthetic, depicting a swashbuckling mariner consistent with the pirate-themed archetypes common in fantasy role-playing. Upon release, the set was noted for its focus on multiplayer experiences, and the token designs were praised for their thematic cohesion with the set's broader artistic direction.
