Provenance

Where it came from

The Pirate token was released as part of the Core Set 2021 expansion for Magic: The Gathering, which launched in July 2020. In the game's mechanics, these tokens are generated by specific cards—most notably 'Admiral Beckett Brass' or 'Dire Fleet Captain'—to represent temporary creatures controlled by players. These tokens function as functional game pieces rather than collectible cards in the traditional sense, designed to streamline gameplay during sessions.

The artwork for this specific token was crafted by illustrator Wisnu Tan, who has contributed extensively to the Magic: The Gathering visual library. His design focuses on a rugged, seafaring aesthetic typical of the game's pirate-themed sets, emphasizing practical attire and a weathered look to fit within the established fantasy lore. The token was received as a standard utility piece, appreciated by players for its clarity and thematic consistency within the Core Set's broader art direction.
