Provenance

Where it came from

Plague Beetle was originally printed in the Urza's Destiny expansion in 1999 as a common black creature. Its inclusion in the Eighth Edition core set, released in 2003, marked a significant milestone for Magic: The Gathering as it featured the game's first major design overhaul. This transition introduced the modern card frame, intended to improve legibility and provide a cleaner aesthetic for the game's tenth anniversary.

The card features artwork by Christopher Rush, one of the most iconic illustrators in the game's early history. His depiction of the insectoid horror reflects the grim, visceral style common to black-aligned cards of the era. Within the Eighth Edition context, the beetle served as an efficient early-game utility creature, prized by players for its swampwalk ability, which allowed it to bypass defenders when an opponent controlled a swamp.
