Where it came from
Planar Nexus was released in 2024 as part of the Modern Horizons 3 Commander set, a collection specifically designed to integrate powerful, high-synergy mechanics into the Commander format. The card is tied to the Eldrazi Incursion deck, reflecting the set's thematic focus on the return of the Eldrazi titans. Its design serves as a versatile utility land, functioning as every basic land type, which provides significant support for multi-colored decks and domain-based strategies.
The artistic direction for this piece reflects the eerie, surreal aesthetic of the Eldrazi, emphasizing the distortion of reality associated with their presence. Illustrators for the Modern Horizons series often aim to balance functional clarity with the atmospheric tension characteristic of the Magic: The Gathering multiverse. Upon its release, the card was widely received by the community as a sophisticated tool for deck-building, valued primarily for its mana fixing capabilities and its synergy with cards that reward the presence of multiple land types.
