Where it came from
Plateau was originally released as a dual land in the Alpha set of Magic: The Gathering in 1993, representing the mountain and plains terrain types. It was part of an iconic cycle of ten cards designed by Richard Garfield to provide efficient mana fixing for competitive decks. The aesthetic for the original card was illustrated by Drew Tucker, who utilized a distinct, atmospheric watercolor style that defined the early visual language of the game.
The Summer Magic edition, also known as the Edgar set, was a limited promotional print run produced in 1994 by Cartamundi. It was intended to correct various errors present in the Revised Edition, but the print run was largely destroyed due to significant production mistakes, including misprinted card backs and incorrect artist credits. Surviving copies of Plateau from this set are exceptionally rare, making them highly sought after by collectors interested in the unique and turbulent history of Magic's early years.
