Why it matters

Provenance

Where it came from

The Poison Counter token was released in 2011 as part of the New Phyrexia set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. It was introduced to support the set's infect mechanic, a prominent feature that allowed players to defeat opponents by accumulating poison counters rather than reducing their life total to zero. This token served as a functional physical reminder for players tracking their corrupted status throughout the game.

Designed within the aesthetic framework of the Phyrexian faction, the art reflects the biomechanical, nightmarish horror associated with the set's lore. The visual language utilizes sharp, visceral imagery to represent the creeping spread of contagion that defines the Phyrexians. As a utility piece in a high-intensity set, it was primarily received as a necessary tool for competitive play, celebrated for clarifying complex board states in a format defined by its unique win conditions.
