Where it came from
The Poison Counter token was released in 2011 as part of the Mirrodin Besieged expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. It served as a functional game aid, intended to help players track the accumulation of poison counters—a mechanic central to the set's Phyrexian-aligned factions—which could cause a player to lose the game if they reached a total of ten.
The token's aesthetic reflects the biomechanical, horror-inspired design philosophy of the Mirrodin Besieged set, which pitted the metallic Mirrans against the corrupting influence of the Phyrexians. Featuring art consistent with the grim, industrial imagery of New Phyrexia, the token provided a thematic and tactile utility for players navigating the high-stakes games introduced by the set's infect mechanic.
