Where it came from
The Beast token, numbered 1 in the New Phyrexia set, was released by Wizards of the Coast in 2011 as a companion piece for various cards in the Magic: The Gathering expansion. These tokens were designed to represent board states created by spells like Glistening Oil or certain planeswalker abilities, serving as a physical placeholder during gameplay. The token system was integrated into booster packs during this era to enhance the tactile experience of the game and provide a standardized visual reference for temporary creatures.
The artwork for this token was created by artist Nils Hamm, who contributed heavily to the aesthetic identity of the Phyrexian sets. Hamm utilized a signature painterly style, blending organic and mechanical textures to evoke the unsettling, corrupted nature of the New Phyrexia plane. His approach sought to emphasize the body horror inherent in the set's theme, portraying the creature as a menacing, multi-limbed entity that reflects the broader transformation of the world depicted in the expansion.
