Where it came from
The Germ token was released in 2011 as part of the Mirrodin Besieged set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. It was designed specifically to represent the unique 'Living Weapon' mechanic introduced in this expansion, where an Equipment card enters the battlefield attached to a freshly created 0/0 black Germ creature token. This design choice allowed players to immediately utilize powerful artifacts that would otherwise be vulnerable on the battlefield.
The illustration, created by artist Chippy, depicts the unsettling, biomechanical aesthetic central to the plane of Mirrodin as it was being corrupted by the Phyrexians. The visual concept focuses on a spindly, nightmare-like construct that reflects the forced synthesis of organic matter and cold metal. Upon its release, the token was widely recognized by the community for effectively communicating the dark, body-horror themes prevalent throughout the Scars of Mirrodin block.
