Provenance

Where it came from

Powder Keg was originally printed as a rare card in the 1998 Urza's Saga expansion for Magic: The Gathering. It was designed by Mike Elliott as a powerful, colorless board control tool that punished opponents for playing low-cost permanents over several turns. The card became a staple in competitive play for its versatility, forcing opponents to rethink their deployment of artifacts and creatures.

This specific version, marked js136a, appeared in the 1999 World Championship Decks product. These decks were pre-constructed replicas of the exact sixty-card decks used by the top players at the 1999 World Championship. The card features the signature of Jakob Söderkar, the player who included it in his tournament deck, and is distinguished by a gold-bordered back that prevents it from being used in official sanctioned tournament play.
