Where it came from
Released in October 1999 as part of the Mercadian Masques expansion for Magic: The Gathering, Power Matrix was designed to reflect the set's central theme of commerce and mechanical ingenuity. The set was inspired by the plane of Mercadia, a world defined by its obsession with trade and invention, which influenced the artifact's function as a versatile utility card that buffs creatures.
The card's artwork was illustrated by rk post, a prominent figure in the game's visual history known for his distinct, sometimes surreal style. His design for Power Matrix features a complex, brass-colored apparatus that emphasizes the industrial aesthetic of the Masquerade block, balancing the intricate, clockwork-inspired lore of the setting with the mechanical clarity required for gameplay.
