Rishadan Brigand

Rishadan Brigand was released in 1999 as part of the Mercadian Masques expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Set on the plane of Mercadia, the expansion introduced themes of commerce and political intrigue, reflected in the set's mechanics which often involved forcing opponents to pay mana to prevent certain actions. The Brigand was designed as a blue creature that taxes the opponent's resources, fitting the set's narrative of pirates and unscrupulous merchants operating within the bustling port city of Rishada.

The card’s illustration was created by artist Greg Staples, who contributed several pieces to the set. Staples utilized a dark, atmospheric style to capture the rogue-like nature of the creature, emphasizing the shadowy and opportunistic character of the inhabitants of Rishada.
